Recreation: Tsukuba University dormitories
This page is dedicated to those who come to Tsukuba
University, and especially the Monbu-kagakusho foreign students who
arrive here every 6 months. Note that this is not representative of all Japan.
These photos have been taken in 1999.

This was the room of a very good friend of mine...
The room is about 9M2. It is equipped with broken
furniture (bed + desk + wardrobe.), 30 years old that you are not allowed
to get rid of. It generously features a sink with cold water. The ceiling
is falling apart in dust. The heating is provided
in the morning and in the evening, but in some rooms it sounds like an
helicopter from 6 AM (impossible to switch off) and it is shut down for
1 week in december, as well as allother facilities. |

The convenient place (Literal translation) |
|
The washing machines
The machines usually work well. But
the evacuation system is not reliable, so the room get flooded quite regularly.
The machine use only cold water. The room is crowded with abandoned clothes. |
|
A nice balcony view from the common room ... |
|
The corridors
The corridors are full with abandoned things, bins, shoes and whatever
doesn't fit in the room. |
|
Where we were supposed to cook
Nobody uses this place anymore. |
|
The bicycle garage
This is to illustrate a strange custom held every year in march: The
people in charge of the dormitories go through to the corridors and throw
every things away from the heights. The floor around the dormitories gets
covered with broken things. A few weeks later, a group of cleaners come
to pick up the pieces, where they can. |
|
Where are the shower?
|
Showers are not included in the dormitories. You have to go to a different
building and pay 170 yens. Then, you can cue for the ofuro (common bath)
or for one of the three individual showers of the campus. |
